OUR MATERIALS
dsc only uses the highest of quality materials, from our sheet material, to our hardwood. all our hardwood is purchased as rough cut lumber meaning we have full control over the processing including the thicknessing. this way we can offer thicker doors than the standard 3/4“ door most other companies offer.
dsc offers our standard sheet material as either a veneer core maple, or a white melamine with a plywood core (ultra-core) which offers greater stability than particle board. the maple can then either be oiled or painted. all our cabinet carcasses are fabricated from 3/4“ material with either 1/2” or 3/4“ solid backs installed. the fabrication includes using biscuits as a positioning aid whilst all the pieces are assembled to create an entire open front box (unlike some manufacturers whom only make sides, and then use small pieces of wood as spreaders for the top, then 1/4” hardboard for the back, giving the carcass zero structure). we are proud to be able to dance on the top of our cabinets!
why no mdf? we should mention dsc never under any circumstance uses mdf. people often ask us why, here are the reasons: The downside of MDF is it is an environmentally bad product and is well known for providing respiratory issues with carpenters that use it exclusively. Other disadvantages include it’s lack of durability, unlike solid wood it soaks up water like a sponge and once that has happened it needs to be replaced. chipping and denting are other problematic issues frequently noted with MDF. due to these reasons we decided early on that we wouldn’t offer a cheap mdf option but focus more on bospoke projects where we have the ability to really show off our talents.

drawer boxes have the choice of 3 different types of joints... a rabbit joint, box joint or dovetail joint, depending on budget. the wood choices for these are completely at the clients discretion, however for rabbit joints we recommend baltic birch, for box joints and dovetail joints we recommmend any type of hardwood. some of our favourites to work with are walnut, zebra wood and quartersawn white oak. all door and drawer hardware have integral soft close as standard, with handles being chosen from our suppliers catalogues with hundreds of choices.
